According to Kampala Metropolitan police, the suspect robbed the gun from the barracks on Monday, November 14 from a police officer’s house.

“Its alleged that on that day at around 2am, unknown thugs broke into the house of one of the police officer’s within the same barracks. Fortunately one of the victims woke up, chased the thieves and managed to cut one on the head with a panga, but still the thief took off and boarded a waiting boda boda which rushed him to Naguru China hospital for treatment," said Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango.

Onyango said that the boda boda rider, after dropping the suspect the hospital, managed to go back to the scene to inquire what had happened and later led people to the hospital. The suspect was identified John Onekalit, 34, a casual worker and a resident of Kisalosalo zone in Kamwokya. He was arrested from the hospital.

Onyango said that upon search, the national identity card of the police officer whose gun was stolen was found in his pocket together with five live ammunitions.

He then led  police  to Kireka barracks where they recovered the stolen gun from a pit latrine.
