Nabbanja says Nyege Nyege festival will go on

Featured

Following a public outcry, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has given permission for the Nyege Nyege festival organisers to carry on with their event as planned.

In a meeting with stakeholders on Wednesday at the Office of the Prime Minister, Nabbanja however cautioned the security officers to keep law and order throughout the event.

The meeting was called amid public outrage over the suspension of the four-day festival by Parliament, which claimed it is immoral and promotes homosexuality.

Anita Among, Speaker of the August House, stated during plenary on Tuesday that Parliament "will not allow the event to take place."

Speaker Among's stance elicited mixed reactions, with several Ugandans claiming that Nyege Nyege is a popular tourist destination that also supports small businesses.

The festival's organisers claim that their event will focus on electronic music scenes from across Africa, as well as sounds from the global diaspora and others.

Nyege Nyege 2022 will be held in Jinja from September 15 to September 18th.
