Busongora is now a war zone, says Besigye

Opposition behemoth, Dr Kizza Besigye has expressed concern about the continued involvement of security in the Busongora South parliamentary by-election, saying this must stop as soon as possible.

The campaign exercise, which started on August 10, ended yesterday ahead of the voting on Thursday (tomorrow).

But Besigye believes rigging is already underway.

"Deployment for vote protection and for vote rigging (by the Junta) get underway from tonight till voting day on Thursday 18th Aug. Toughest phase will start after closure of voting at 4pm- tallying and announcement," he wrote.

Besigye explained that they have tried to mobilise people of Kasese to say “enough is enough” through the Busongora South “by-election.

"As always, Busongora is now like a war front- military and police deployments, armoured fighting vehicles; tear gas trucks among others. This must stop. Ugandans must unite and rise to defy Mr Museveni uncivil and undemocratic behaviour," he said.

Besigye asked the people of Kasese to remain strong and focused to ensure that the regime comes to an end within a short period of time.

“I would like to thank the people of Kasese for being strong and for being firm on your issues and for not being shaken by the regime. The people of Kasese have been fighting for their rights and freedom and this has enabled them to decide for who can lead them," he said.

Busongora South has a total of 100 polling stations with 51,255 registered voters.

The by-election has attracted seven candidates that include; Jackson Mbaju of NUP; FDC's Aloysius Baguma Kighema; DP’s Businge, and NRM's Gideon Thembo Mujungu. Others are; Juma Munezero (Ind), Doreen Izagiire (Ind), and David Mulindwa Isimbwa (Ind).
