KCCA to carry out boda boda census starting today

KCCA has announced a census for all boda bodas in Uganda’s capital Kampala starting today, Monday.

According to a notice by KCCA, starting today, all boda bodas operating in the city are to be enumerated during an exercise to take place at selected centres in the city.

“Riders should come with dully filled application forms available at the census centres, national identity card, letters from LC and Parish Internal Security Officer and copies of the motorcycle logbooks,” the notice reads in part.

KCCA says that the exercise will run every day for 15 days up to August , 30, 2022 between 8am and 5pm.

“Riders shall apply and be counted in their respective divisions of operation. For riders who registered with the RCCs, this exercise will require them to update and re-validate the information provided.”

Authorities say the exercise is free and for all riders and motorcycle owners to participate.

According to KCCA in Nakawa division, the exercise will be done at the community hall whereas in Kawempe, Makerere Yellow Primary School, Kawempe Mbogo Primary School, Mpererwe C.O.U Primary School and St.Paul Kyebando Primary School will be centes for the census.

On the other side, riders in Central division will go to Bat Valley Primary School, Old Kampala Secondary School whereas in Makindye the exercise will be carried out at Officers’ Mess ,Lukuli Play Ground and Kansanga Seed School Playground whereas in Lubaga division, the exercise will be carried out at the division gardens.

The development comes at a time when authorities , especially in Kampala are carrying out a registration and training exercise for all boda bodas.

The registration done by KCCA and Ministry for Kampala as well as the RCCs requires riders to register right from their respective stages, parishes and then divisions.

The  Ministry of Works and Transport working with the Uganda Driving Licensing Agency on the other side trains the registered  boda boda riders on proper road use and traffic rules and guidelines.

The riders trained and registered are then given reflector jackets basing on their respective divisions with registration numbers.

The exercise has however not been popular as several riders have declined to registers and get trained claiming that many exercises of a similar nature have in the past been carried out and they had to pay money, only for nothing to come out of the registration.

However, government has insisted that in a few months to come, it will be mandatory that for any rider to operate in the city, they must have registered and got trained.
