Nomination of candidates for Bukimbiri, Gogonyo by-elections kicks off today

The Electoral commission has kicked off the nomination of candidates to contest in the by-election for Member of Parliament for Bukimbiri County and Gogonyo County constituencies respectively.

Paul Bukenya, the EC acting spokesperson said in a statement the nominations will be conducted at the office of the returning officer in the above districts today and tomorrow starting at 9am and ending at 5pm.

"We are starting the nominations of candidates to contest in the by-election for Member of Parliament for Bukimbiri County in Kisoro district and Gogonyo County in Pallisa district. The exercise is starting today Monday 1st August 2022," he said.

He explained that the aspiring candidates will be required to fulfil all the requirements for the nomination for Member of Parliament.

"We already issued the nomination forms to the aspiring candidates and this exercise will be concluded on Tuesday 2nd August 2022.,” he said.

Bukenya said the nominated candidates will conduct campaign meetings for a period of seven days,  from Wednesday August 3 until Tuesday August 9, 2022.

According to the EC, the polling day and tallying of results for the by-elections will be conducted on Thursday August 11 2022.

"We call upon stakeholders in those districts to follow this programme and comply with the guidelines that we have issued for these activities," he said.

In June this year, the Court of Appeal threw out two Members of Parliament subscribing to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), thus ordering fresh elections in Bukimbiri and Gogonyo.

The two legislators are: Eddie Kwizera Wagahungu (Bukimbiri County) in Kisoro district and Derrick Orone (Gogonyo County) in Pallisa district.
