EC sets date for Soroti East by-election
The Electoral Commission has revealed that the by election of the Member of Parliament for Soroti East, in Soroti City will take place on July 28.
According to the electoral programme, the Commission will also fill the vacancy for Municipality Directly-elected Councillor for Acetgwen Ward in Soroti City.
In a statement,the spokesperson EC Paul Bukenya,said the by-election programme will commence with an update of the national voters’ register from 10th to 14th June, 2022 at update stations in each of the thirteen wards (parishes) in Soroti East Constituency.
He said the commission has appointed Tuesday June 14 2022 as the cut-off date for registration of voters in the Constituency.
"Registration and transfer of voters from one polling station to another within Soroti East Constituency will not be conducted after this date,"he said.
According to the commission,the display of the national voters’ register will be conducted from June 27 to July 6 2022, at all the 63 polling stations in Soroti East Constituency.
"The nomination of candidates will be conducted for a period of two days, that is, Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th July 2022 at the Office of the City Returning Officer, Soroti City,"said Bukeya.
Bukenya noted that the campaign meetings for candidates for Member of Parliament and Municipality Directly-elected Councillor will be held from 21st to 26th July 2022.
"Polling for Member of Parliament and Municipality Directly-elected Councillor shall take place on Thursday July 28 2022 at all polling stations in Soroti East Constituency, and (polling) shall start at 7:00am and close at 4:00pm,"he stated.
The seat fell vacant following the nullification of the election of FDC's Moses Attan's victory by court.
Meanwhile, the EC said it is currently implementing a programme for conduct of Women Councils and Committees Elections.
The commission, accordingly, approved the programme for the elections of Women Councils and Committees Elections from the Village to the National level as attached hereunto.
In preparation for the conduct of these elections, the commission conducted a countrywide exercise to compare, verify, harmonise and confirm all administrative units.
During the exercise, it was able to address various concerns that included legal establishment of some villages/cells, names of villages and parishes, boundaries of some villages, placement of some villages within sub-counties and contestation over some villages located in wild life conservation areas and forest reserves.
The exercise was conducted from March 16 to March 27 2022, and the EC, together with the Ministry of Local Government, harmonised the processed returns to show who is who in respect of mandate in elections.
