DPP launches five year strategic plan

The office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has launched a five year strategic plan that will guide the office’s activities in the next five years .

The plan under the theme,’ Streamlined, efficient and effective prosecutions for sustainable socio–economic transformation’ details the strategic direction for the office of the DPP  for the next  five years, presents the interventions and activities that will be conducted by each department , the  implementation arrangements that draw up a risk and mitigation mechanism, the communication and financing plan and the monitoring and evaluation, learning framework for the office of the DPP to follow–up on its implementation and results.

Speaking at the launch, the acting Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Wilson Muruuli Mukasa applauded the DPP’s office for the milestones reached in the past five years , noting that the new pan will play a big role in the enhancement of administration of justice to the people of Uganda.

“By the end of the five year period, the office of the DPP will have achieved a lot including an increase in the number of cases prosecuted which will help reduce case backlog,” Minister Muruuli Mukasa noted.

He said that if implemented well, the five year strategic plan will also greatly help in ensuring reduction in crime since cases will be disposed of   and assets lost to crime recovered.

The minister however noted that for the strategic plan to be effected there would be need for sufficient resource allocation to ensure that the strategies in the plan are realised.

He pledged the ministry’s continued commitment to support the office of the DPP in order to ensure successful implementation of the plan.

“I hope to see a better and more vibrant office of the DPP with more output that will increase the confidence of the beneficiaries.”

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Jane Frances Abodo said the strategic plan provides a clear way to how her office will carry out its duties and the specific targets to be achieved in the next five years.

“The plan will guide prosecutorial agencies in Uganda to conduct, exercise and perform their powers under a coordinated, cohesive, fair, transparent and consistent justice system with the aim of enhancing public confidence in the criminal justice system and ensuring a crime free society, which are critical for Uganda’s socio–economic transformation,”Abodo said.

The head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Sharon Nyambe  in the next five years they will put more efforts on building capacity in the areas of cybercrime, combatting illicit flows, money laundering and recovery of proceeds of crime while partnering with the office of the DPP.
