Kampala metropolitan police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire told Nile Post in a phone call that property worth millions of shillings had been destroyed in the Sunday afternoon fire.

Owoyesigyire said that a welder was identified as the possible cause of the fire and that police had took him into custody to help with the investigations.

“The fire started as a result of welding from one of the kiosks, our fire department put it out before it could spread,” Owoyesigyire said.

“We have identified a welder called Vicent Sanjo as the possible cause of the fire and we have him in our custody,” he added.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire was indeed caused by someone who was welding at one of the kiosks.

They said that this welder ignored the fact that some of the kiosks were grass thatched and sparks from his welding work caused the fire outbreak.
