Uganda Martyrs Museum turns into a hotspot for religious tourism

Uganda Martyrs Museum, located in Namugongo has turned into the country’s most visited religious tourism site, especially in the month of June.

As we near,3rd June, a day when we pay respect to the fallen Uganda Martyrs who inspite of deep suffering never denied their faith, a thousands of believers across the globe flock Namugongo to honour them, an act that the tourism experts have since termed as religious tourism, one of the oldest forms of tourism.

And right inside, Namugongo, is the Uganda Martyrs Museum, a silent place we get to the deep reality that befell the Kabaka’s pages that became Martyrs.

While at this historical hub, one is given a professional guide to walk them through the execution grounds that have a couple of statues of the fallen martyrs, killing tools, and the vintage pieces like chairs, spears, knives, backcloth, just to mention but a few.

The museum, which was founded in 2015, is now open for the general public to explore this rich history at a fee of only shillings 10,000 for adults and shillings 5,000 for kids.

About Namugongo 

Namugongo was a designated execution place for people who challenged the power of Buganda Kings.

In Buganda’s culture, royals were treated differently throughout their life and death.

For the reason, even the convicts, awaiting death had to be treated with some respect. Therefore, different places were gazetted for the execution of royals and important dignitaries. Such places included, Busega, Munyonyo and the famous Namugongo.

Unintentionally, Namugongo has become a one of the most visited tourism sites because that is where most of Uganda Martyrs laid down their lives for their faith.
