Uganda will renew her quest to appear at the most prestigious nation tournament on the continent after being pitted against 2019 champions Algeria in the 2023 African Nations Cup qualifiers.

According to the draw held on Tuesday, Uganda was drawn in Group F together with Algeria, Tanzania and Niger in the AFCON 2023 qualifiers that will kick off in June.

The teams

Uganda last played against Algeria in the 2000 AFCON qualifiers .

In the first leg played in Algeria, Uganda lost 2-0 whereas in the return leg in Kampala, the hosts won 2-1.

However, Uganda didn’t progress out of Group 7 after coming last with six points, one below second placed Algeria.

For Tanzania, the two teams last played in March 2019  for AFCON finals that were held in Egypt.

In the first leg, Uganda was held to a goalless draw in Kampala by Tanzania but in the return leg in Dar Es Salaam, the hosts beat Uganda three nil.

However, the lost was inconsequential to Uganda since the team had already qualified for the AFCON finals as group leaders.

On the other side, the win ensured Tanzania qualified for the 2019 AFCON finals on the final day as the second placed team in the group.

For Niger last faced Uganda in the 2008 AFCON qualifiers in which they were walloped three nil in Kampala after a goalless draw in Niamey.

In the group, Uganda came second as Nigeria topped the group whereas Niger came second from bottom.

In the latest draws whose qualifying matches will start in June, the top two teams in the group will qualify for the 2023 AFCON finals to be played in Ivory Coast.
