UPC closes nominations for EALA

The Uganda Peoples Congress UPC has closed the nomination exercise of its members seeking to represent the party in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

Ben Bakkabulindi, the Assistant Secretary General of UPC who headed the nomination exercise said seven members had picked nomination forms but only three managed to return them before the deadline.

One of the three is the party’s secretary general Fred Ebil who returned his nomination forms on 8th February 2022 and was successfully nominated.

Ebil said that he has got enough expertise that is required for the position since he has been a member of parliament and also party leader.

"I was a former member of parliament representing Kole South in the 9th parliament and also led different committees of parliament, that is Foreign Affairs committee and budget committee where I gained a lot of experience that I can use to participate in EALA," he said.

Ebil said being a person who speaks many languages including Kiswahili, he will be able to communicate successfully.

"I will use Kiswahili to communicate with the members of EALA and also legislate on the issues that matter to country as well as building the relationship with others," Ebil said.

Others who returned the nomination forms are Samuel Ebyelo and Silver Oluka.

UPC's current representative in EALA is Chris Opoka, whose term expires this year.
