Lawyer, Anthony Wameli named best criminal defence lawyer of the year

Anthony Wameli Yeboah has been named as the best criminal defence lawyer of the year by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) and his law firm, Wameli & Co Advocates was also selected as the best law firm of the year.

Other lawyers that were awarded include Justice Kenneth Kakuru who was given the distinguished lifetime service award, Turyamusiima Geoffrey as the rising star and the human rights defender of the year.

Wameli shot to limelight four years ago when he represented suspects accused of killing the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP)Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

He represents the alleged rebel leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) Jamil Mukulu and former presidential candidate Gen Henry Tumukunde in the treason case.

Wameli, who heads the NUP legal team has represented the party's jailed supporters.

In his congratulatory message, NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine said: "We are absolutely delighted that the legal fraternity views him as a very committed and devoted lawyer. Counsel Wameli has defended countless comrades who have been arrested and illegally detained."

Kyagulanyi also congratulated Turyamusiima who is also part of their legal team, on being voted the human rights defender of the year.

"He has defended human rights with great passion and devotion and we congratulate you comrade on an award very well deserved. May God bless both of you, and may you continue to be an inspiration to the younger lawyers to follow in your footsteps," he said.
