Members of Parliament hailing from Busoga under their umbrella body Busoga Parliamentary Caucus have asked government to consider returning the assets and properties of the kingdom ahead of the 7th Coronation anniversary of Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV.
The celebrations are scheduled for September 13.
The executive committee of the caucus led by their chairperson Steven Kisa, said the return of the Busoga kingdom properties from government will not only empower the kingdom but also steer development in the area.
Following the abolition of the cultural institutions in 1966, the central government took over most of the kingdom’s assets, some of which it continues to use as district and Sub-County headquarters among others.\
The MPs also re-echoed their calls to government to fast track the establishment of Busoga University as a Public University.
Asuman Basalirwa, the Bugiri Municipality MP and legal advisor to the caucus said its unacceptable that some of the recent universities like Mountains of the Moon University in Fort Portal has been taken over by government yet Busoga University which has been in existence for close to two decades is yet to be considered.
The caucus also contributed Shs 5 million towards the preparation of the anniversary celebrations that will take place at Igenge palace in Jinja district.
