Kole: District commercial officer arrested for mismanaging Shs 50 million Emyooga money

Police in Kole district has apprehended the district commercial officer Joseph Okello and other Sacco leaders for mismanaging Shs 50 million meant for the Emyooga programme.

The spokesperson Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Charles Twiine confirmed the development without giving more details.

He stated that police will recover the money and have the suspects prosecuted according to the law.

An initiative on job and wealth creation, Emyooga was launched by President Museveni in August 2019 with the purpose of transforming 68% of Ugandan homesteads from subsistence to market-oriented production.

The government earmarked over Shs 200 billion to be distributed to Saccos in 347 constituencies of the 146 districts in the country and that the intention was to foster development and convert the 68% homesteads on subsistence into market-oriented production.

Each of the Saccos is supposed to receive Shs 30 million as seed capital, save for the private teachers and leaders that each receives shs60 million and 50 million respectively

However, there have complaints about the mismanagement of these funds from different areas across the country after findings by the parliamentary Covid-19 task force that there were glaring discrepancies in the expenditure of the funds.

Some politicians claimed the Emyooga programme just like the previous programs rolled out by the government such as Poverty Action Plan, Poverty Alleviation Program, Entandikwa, NUSAF 1 and 2 among others would not yield the desired results if the approach don’t change.
