At least 71 people in Lugazi Municipality who were found drinking alcohol in bars in violation of the Ministry of Health guidelines were apprehended by police in a sting operation on July 13.
Hellen Butoto, Sezibwa region police spokesperson said in a statement that they carried out the operation after a tip off from the local leaders in the communities in Lugazi Municipality to the effect that small bars and lodges with bars were operating full scale.
Consequently, a joint operation by security agencies was conducted in the slum areas of the municipality leading to the arrest of those that were found flouting Covid-19 measures.
Butoto said that some of the suspects were ladies who were found positioned themselves around the bars and lodges.
“Two of our officers during the operation sustained injuries after some of the drunk suspects turned violent and started stoning the officers. The officers are receiving treatment at Kawolo Hospital,” said Butoto.
Police said that the suspects will be charged with engaging in acts likely to spread an infectious disease.
Police vowed to continue to enforce the guidelines in an effort to curb the spread of the pandemic.
