Over 1000 arrested from Kampala bars ahead of Museveni Covid address
A total of 1100 people have been arrested by Police in Kampala during operations targeting bars, the Nile Post has learnt.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, Police on Saturday night conducted an operation aimed at enforcing Covid-1p Standard Operating Procedures as issued by government leading them to bars.

“The aim was to raid bars that have been working in total disregard of the Ministry of Health guidelines. A total of 1,100 suspects have been arrested and over 50 motor vehicles have been impounded,”Owoyesigyire said.
“The suspects were arrested from different bars around Kampala Metropolitan Area. We retaliate that bars are not yet opened. Police will not hesitate to arrest any suspects found violating stipulated guidelines. “
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the suspects will be produced in courts of law on offences of doing a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease.
“We urge members of the public to observe standard operating procedures, like wearing masks in public places and sanitising, to avoid contract Coronavirus or spreading it to others.”
The development comes at a time when the number of new Covid infections in Uganda continues to go up day by day.
On Friday, the country registered 1247 new Covid cases, 812 of whom were in Kampala.
President Museveni is expected today, Sunday evening to address the country on the Covid situation.
It is also expected that during the address, the president will issue new guidelines to be followed in a bid to control the spread of the virus .
The Minister for Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng recently said Uganda, Namibia and Zambia are the three African countries with severe resurgence of the COVID19 infection.
