UYD wants Museveni's swearing-in ceremony halted

The Uganda Young Democrats (UYD)  wants the swearing in ceremony of President Museveni, scheduled for May 12, stopped claiming that it will expose young people to the new Covid-19 variant.

The new Covid-19 variant is said to be more deadly to young people below 35 years, who comprise more than 65% of Uganda’s population.

At least 4,000 people have been invited for the function.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, UYD leader, Ismail Kirya, said that it is absurd to organise such a national function in this period of global pandemic uncertainty given that the deadly Covid-19 variant has been reportedly detected in Uganda leading to the closure of an International school.

"The swearing in ceremony will expose and position Ugandans to a very high risk given the fact that over 20 foreign heads of state some from countries flagged off as high risk have been invited,"said Kirya.

"Unless the minister of Health Jane Ruth Aceng lied to the nation that the Indian variant of Covid-19 was also detected in Uganda, the country can't risk organising such nature of event under prevailing health circumstances."

He appealed to the organisers of this swearing in function to reconsider their decision and immediately cancel it in order to safeguard the lives of Ugandans.

Kirya assured Ugandans that they have both the intellectual and physical capacity to deal with issues that put the lives of young people at stake in order to safeguard the future generation.
