NRM pulls out of Mawogola North MP race; Candidates come as independents

2021 Elections Watch

The ruling NRM party has said it will officially not front any candidate to contest on the party flag in the Mawogola North constituency Member of Parliament race over unforeseen circumstances.

A tribunal set up by the ruling National Resistance Movement to look into petitions arising out of the September 4 party primaries early this week ruled that Godfrey Aine Kaguta, also known as Sodo a brother to President Museveni was not rightly elected as the Mawogola North constituency party flag bearer where he had beaten Shartis Musherure Kutesa.

The tribunal however noted without proper exercise of voter franchise, they were not in position to pronounce the winner of the election and forwarded the matter to the party’s Central Executive Committee.

However, in a letter to the party electoral commission chairperson, DrTanga Odoi, the NRM Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba said a decision had been taken not to endorse any candidate following the confusion caused by the Septmeber,30 election in the party primaries.

“It is not possible to summon the Central Executive Committee meeting to consider the reference made to it by the elections dispute tribunal mainly because of time limitations given that the last day of nominations for Members of Parliament is October,16,2020,”Lumumba said in a letter written on October,15, a day to the closure of the nominations around the country.

“I have therefore taken the considered decision that the National Resistance Movement will not endorse any candidate to contest and carry its flag for the position of Member of Parliament for Mawogola North Constituency in Ssembabule district.”

The development followed a face-off between after both Godfrey Aine Kaguta also known as Sodo, a brother to President Museveni and Shartsi Kutesa Musherure, a daughter to Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kutesa that ended with a stalemate.

On Friday, both candidates were nominated to stand for Mawogola North constituency as independents.
