Huawei donates shs100m ICT equipment to Kyambogo, Uganda Martyrs University

Chinese company, Huawei has donated ICT study equipment $30,000(approximately shs110 million) to Kyambogo and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi.

According to the company, the donation was aimed at aiding in the hands-on study in the Huawei ICT academy that was started in various universities around the country in 2019.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Monday, the Ministry of ICT Permanent Secretary, Vincent Bagiire noted that skills imparted into students through the academy should help them start their own enterprises.

“For us, it is important because we realize and recognize that ICT can be used for efficiencies in whatever we do but that it’s also a business. We hold the view that the skills that have been imparted unto the students can be used to create their own enterprises instead of looking for employment,” Bagiire said.

The Huawei Uganda Managing Director, Gao Fei noted that the ICT equipment will ensure students have hands on what they study at the various universities.

“We hope that it will aid and ease the teaching and learning process of the students. With this donation, we believe that we shall trigger exploration which lights the way forward. We also believe that this exploration begins with sharing wisdom, and exchange of ideas to open up exciting new possibilities in a digital world,”Gao said.

Huawei has now opened ICT academies at eight Ugandan universities including Makerere, Muni, Kyambogo, MUBS,Kabale, Soroti, Nkozi and Mbarara.

The Huawei ICT academy course combines both theory and practical operations which range from Enterprise Networks such as Routing and Switching, Advanced Network and Network technology, information technology such as Storage, Cloud computing and big data among others.
