Lukwago unveils the Impala Monument in Kampala
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago yesterday unveiled the Impala Monument at Jubilee House in a brief scientific occasion.
Kampala derives its name from the animal Impala, a type of antelope which used to graze on the slopes of Mengo and some other hills of the city.

The name “Hill of the Impala” (Akasozi Ka Impala) was given specifically to the hill on which Captain Fredrick Lord Lugard, a British administrator, established his camp (Fort) on December 18, 1890.
In 2016, Lukwago made a commitment regarding the promotion of Kampala as a hub for investment and tourism.
He said that with its rich cultural heritage, beautiful terrain or landscape, huge water bodies, particularly Lake Victoria, tropical climate and soils, hospitable and cultured people, Kampala has got a huge potential to attract tourists and genuine investors.
He noted then that he would be disingenuous to himself if he did not mention that he felt extremely nostalgic about the old emblem or logo of the authority, with the image of an Impala engraved thereon, as a symbol of our cherished heritage.
The Gorilla monument was earlier unveiled by the KCCA executive director Dorothy Kisaka at Nile Avenue in memory of Ruhondeza, a male gorilla who was the leader of Mubare group in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Lukwago momentously appreciated Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Tourism Board and Jubilee Insurance for the Partnership that has seen us bring back life to Kampala through tourism and he called upon them to join him as he embarks on the journey of realizing a museum for Kampala.
