DP replaces rejected Kayanja with Senkubuge in Kampala Lord Mayor race

The Democratic Party has replaced rejected Beatrice Kayanja with veteran actor, Charles James Ssenkubuge in the race for the 2021 Kampala Lord Mayor.

Kayanja's nomination was brought to a shocking halt by the Electoral Commission last week, with social media reports citing issues to do with her academic credentials.

Speaking to Nile Post, however, The Electoral Commission's returning officer for Kampala, Fredrick Muwaya said that Kayanja was nit a registered voter for Kampala, which is a prerequisite for any candidate who wants to run as Lord Mayor.

"She was not a registered voter," Muwaya confirmed.

Although DP spokesperson Fred Mwesigwa was not clear on why Kayanja was dropped, he confirmed to journalists that DP had zeroed down on Senkubuge as its flag bearer in the 2021 Kampala City Lord Mayor race.

According to DP lawyer, Erias Luyimbaazi, the party decided to front Senkubuge because he fits perfectly in the current political environment in the country.

Luyimbaazi said, "Senkubuge is a senior citizen of this country, he has worked in Kampala for many years and made connections with so many people of all social classes and that is a candidate that DP and Kampala needs."

Senkubuge will now run against NUP's Nabilah Naggayi Sempala, NRM's Ragga Dee, FDC’s incumbent Erias Lukwago, and Independent Joseph Mayanja.
