Motive for panga- wielding thugs who broke into Opondo’s home not known- Police

Police have said the motive behind the panga-wielding assailants who broke into government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo is not yet known.

Opondo in a distress call to police claimed that his home in Nasuuti, Mukono District was under attack and he had lost contact with his family members.

“My home in Nasuuti said to be under attack by unknown assailants.  I am out of home but for now, l have lost contact with members of my family reported to be under attack by unknown people,” Opondo said.

He said that the attackers could be many in number and have grouped in the compound while others are up and about inside the house, combing different bedrooms and flipping things

“Assailants said to be many and with machetes in my bedroom and compound. Police are outside have not yet entered. They have entered my house and into the bedrooms. My family under danger,” he reported.

The Nile Post has however learnt that when the thugs entered the home, they took away the phone from Opondo’s wife and this partly explains the reason behind the government spokesperson’s comments that he had lost contact with his family members.

However, according to the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the phone was later recovered outside the home.

“The wife who was home at that time alleges panga welding men attacked the home, rummaged around the house and in the end, a phone and shs30,000 was gone.  Police arrived a few minutes after the call,” Owoyesigyire told the Nile Post.

He says police arrived shortly after the distress call and found the thugs had ran away but all the house furniture and other items had been turned upside down by the assailants.

“The thugs upon not getting what they wanted took off. The phone was later recovered during the search it was dropped outside. We have made arrests so far but all statements from witnesses have been taken. The motive of the assailants is not yet known but investigations are ongoing,”Owoyesigyire said.
