NRM primaries: Candidate petitions  electoral commission to have Nakaseke South results cancelled

2021 Elections Watch

One of the candidates in the concluded NRM primaries has petitioned the party electoral commission seeking to have the results for Nakaseke South cancelled.

Charles Nsereko Kawuma who polled 10792 votes was declared winner of the election in Nakaseke South after defeating Arthur Nkalubo 4,805 votes   and Joseph Nyanzi 3,362 votes in second and third positions respectively.

However, in his petition, Nkalubo says the election was marred with a number of irregularities and subsequently, the party electoral commission ought to cancel the results.

“The NRM primaries elections held on September,4, 2020 in Nakaseke South were marred by massive rigging, bribery of both the electorate and your petitioner’s agents, intimidation of voters, denial of our agents access to declaration forms especially in Kapeeka and altering declaration forms,”Nkalubo says.

He explains that at some polling stations like Nakaseeta, Kibaale, Buyungwe, Nakaseke (Ssaza), Kyambogo (Nakaseke Sub county), St. Stephen polling centre, Miginge and Nsaka,Semuto town council Lule ward where he had “massive” support ,there was no voting at all and that at some polling stations non eligible voters participated in the elections like at Kapeeka Barracks where even soldiers were allowed to vote.

Nkalubo argues that because of the said malpractices, the election was not free and fair in accordance with the 1995 Constitution of Uganda.

“Your petitioner therefore seeks cancellation of all results from Nakaseke South Constituency to allow fresh elections to be held. Your petitioner prays for any other remedy available regarding these primaries in regards to the aforementioned electoral malpractices in Nakaseke South Constituency.”

A number of people, especially those who lost in the conclude elections said the process was not free and fair because a number of ineligible voters were allowed to participate.
