Police to arrest people, confiscate bank notes written on "Vote Bobi Wine for 2021"

A senior police officer has warned those with notes written on "vote Bobi Wine for president" to tread carefully lest they will end in jail.

The officer speaking to The Rogue said they had instructed business people to alert them in case someone comes with the notes such that they can apprehend them and confiscate the notes.

Local and international currency notes with inscriptions; "Vote Bobi Wine for President" and "Vote Museveni in 2021" made rounds on social media platforms yesterday.

Bank of Uganda issued a statement warning people against the practice.

Yet people did not heed this advice and the frenzy continued late into the night.

Now police wants to get tough on the matter.

An officer has said they are going to apprehend those with notes written on "Vote Bobi Wine for President and take the money into safe custody.

Asked why the were only targeting Bobi Wine supporters and not those with notes written on "Vote Museveni for 2021", the officer first kept quiet unsure of how to respond to the question.

Then he retorted: "If you realise, supporters of Bobi Wine are writing on Shs 1000, 5,000 and 10,000 notes. Yes, there are few who have written on Shs 20,000 and 50,000. But nearly all those of Museveni are writing on Shs 50,000 notes. So if you were in my shoes, which of the two groups of supporters would you arrest?"

"Both," I responded adding that

He said even though some of them participated in the walk against corruption last week, many Museveni supporters are likely to bribe the police to leave them because in the first place they have more money.

"So if an officer comes to arrest someone who has Shs 5 million and they offer him Shs 300,000, do you think the officer will reject the money?"

Yet supporters of Bobi Wine are poor and thus easy to apprehend, the officer confidently said, puffing away at a cigarette.

Bobi Wine supporter will try to bribe you with Shs 2,000 which can't even buy a good meal.

The operation will start from Kamwokya then move to Kasangati and Gayaza, the officer said.
