Police in Iki Iki, trading centre in Budaka district fired teargas and live bullets yesterday to disperse angry mob that wanted to attack the police station and lynch a suspect.

It’s reported that several people sustained minor injuries during the running battle.

The mob descended on to the police post where the suspect had been whisked for custody after he was rescued from a mob who wanted to lynch him at his home.

The suspect, Difasi Kirya, was accused of harbouring ghosts at his home which attack people and allegedly kill them.

DPC Budaka Mr. Salam Wilson James confirmed the shooting.

He said after getting the information that the mob wanted to lynch a man accusing him of having ghosts commonly known as Bumenke.

He said after realizing that the mob wanted to attack the police post so as to lynch the suspect he ordered for the evacuation of the suspect to Budaka but the crowd started blocking the van and pelting it with stones.

Okurut Faustino the CIID Budaka police station said police has recorded over 30 cases of such nature since the start of this year.

He said despite community sensitisation, some residents still believed the ghosts are there and they want to kill them.

He advised residents to desist from taking the law in their hands.
