Bursars' body: Poor pay main cause of corruption

The Uganda National Bursars’ Association (UNBA) has said the anti-corruption campaign will not work until government bridges the salary gap between the different public servants.

The secretary general of the association Hussein Sekandi said that public servants are tempted to engage in corrupt practices due to the poor pay.

Today, President Museveni led a walk against corruption, something that generated mixed reactions of excitement and scorn.

However, the Uganda National Bursars’ Association (UNBA) said the campaign will not work until government bridges the salary gap between the different public servants.

Ssekandi, the secretary general of the association said public servants earn peanuts leading many of them to engage in corrupt practices.

Ssekandi asked government to consider increasing the salaries of public servants, particularly finance administrators in schools.

The bursars said they many of them had exercised a high degree of integrity because when government releases money, it passes through their hands.

They feared that some bursars could be tempted to steal part of this money if their salaries are not enhanced.
