The suspects in court

Three of the four suspects accused of masterminding the recent spate of mobile money robberies and murders have told the army court they will not defend themselves against the charges.

Four people including Bob Anichan, a UPDF deserter formerly attached to Uganda Military Academy Kabamba, Dennis Mangusho , formerly attached to the 63rd Battalion, Stanley Mulunda alias Jumba Frank a casual labourer from Masanafu and Issa Ntale alias Ganja , a boda boda rider areaccused of masterminding the recent spate targeting mobile money points where agents were killed and huge sums of money robbed by armed men.

The General Court Martial in Makindye on Tuesday ruled that the four suspects have a case to answer and therefore should prepare to defend themselves before the court.

“After listening to evidence adduced by the prosecution, this court is satisfied that a prima facie case is proved against the group and therefore are put on their defense,” Lt. Gen.Andrew Gutti ruled on Tuesday afternoon.

He, however, asked the four people to tell court the mode they will use while defending themselves against the charges but in response, three of them said they will choose to keep quiet.

Dennis Mangusho, Issa Ntale and Stanley Mulunda said they will only keep quiet when it comes to defending themselves as their colleague, Bob Anichan said he would present three witnesses to defend him.

Lt.Gen. Gutti, however, adjourned the case to Monday, December 9 for the court to start hearing Anichan’s defence.

On the night of June 10, 2019 armed thugs travelling on motorcycles attacked a mobile money point at Kirimanyago village, in Zzana, Makindye Ssabagabo in Wakiso district before killing the occupants including Harriet Nalwadda, 33 and Maureen Nakabuubi.

These had earlier carried out several robberies and murders of mobile money agents in various parts of Kampala and Wakiso districts where huge sums of money were robbed.

Recently, Robina Nalwoga, the wife toIssa Ntale pinned him on the murder of two mobile money agentsat Zzana along Entebbe road before the army court.

“He returned home with a black bag containing money but also had blood stains and hid it under our matrimonial bed,”Nalwoga told court

Earlier, Bintah Ssengoba pinned Stanley Mulunda on having participated in the Zzana robbery and subsequent murder.

The prosecution alleges that on June 10th while at Zana Cell in Makindye Ssabagabo Division, the accused persons robbed Harriet Nalwadda of shillings 6.8 million shillings before shooting her dead together with her colleague Moreen Nakabuubi.
