Report: Ugandans spend more time sleeping than working

A report released by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) on labour productivity shows that most people spend what would be their valuable time sleeping or doing unproductive work.

The study which was conducted in 112 districts of Uganda revealed more than time ten hours of day according the findings of the report are spent on sleeping , eating and drinking, and socialising with friends instead of engaging in productive work.

Dunstan Aguta, a statistician from UBOS said: "Sleeping is one of the activities where most time is utilized.

Some of the unpaid work include taking care of children, cooking for them, looking for firework, fetching water, cleaning the house and utensils

He said these kinds of work is where women spend a lot of time compared with men.

The finding of the survey indicates that women spend at least 3 hours on unproductive work compared to men who spend about 5 hours.

Women also spend about 6 hours on unpaid work while men spend at least 5 hours.

However, some of the research findings have been challenged.

David Batema, a high court judge, said every work is productive even sleeping.

"If you don’t sleep, you won't perform very well in court. Raising children, caring for the children is it productive or non-productive? For me I am saying it is productive. The child learns to walk, it learns to talk,"he said.

He said all the work work done is productive regardless of the time spent doing it.

The survey report was launched by the state minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Peace Mutuuzo.
