Government mourns the passing of UHRC boss Med Kaggwa

The government of Uganda has extended condolences to the family, friends and the country at large in respect to the death of the Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson (UHRC), Med Kaggwa.

The UHRC chairperson was rushed to Case hospital on Wednesday morning after being found unconscious in his vehicle and was later pronounced dead.

Now the government, through its spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, has extended its condolences saying the late made 'significant contributions to Uganda in the Public Sector'.

According to the statement that has been accessed by this website, government is also looking at making further communication about his death in due course.

"The Government of the Republic of Uganda has learnt with profound sadness of the untimely death of the Chairman Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) , Med Kaggwa, which occured this morning; Wednesday, 20th November, 2019. The late made significant contributions to Uganda in the public sector, most especially as the serving Chairman of the UHRC," the letter reads in part.

Until his death, Kaggwa, had served as chairperson of the UHRC for more than eight years, making him the longest serving member in that position.

He was also Commissioner and Special Rapporteur on Prisons and Conditions of Detention of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and a Commissioner of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission.

According to a family member this website found at the hospital, Kaggwa who lives in Mulago had some illness and decided to drive himself to hospital for medication but didn’t make it.
