Kasese: Three children die after house collapses on them

Three children died in Kasese after the house in which they were living collapsed due to landslides.

The deceased are Mumbere Derrick aged three years, Mumbere Wesley 10 years and Masereka John also 10 years old.

The three died after a rock hit the upper side of the house they were sleeping in.

Only one child who was together with the deceased’s survived narrowly but she is still paralysed in the legs as the debris covered her lower body parts.

The two 10 year olds are sons of a one Masereka Modesto whereas the three year old is his grandson.

The grandfather of the children who was in the same house with the victims said:  "We slept at 9pm and the incident happened at 11pm. I got to know when the survivor screamed for help but I also tried in my means to saves them but failed because they had closed themselves in the room," Masereka said.

The LC III chairperson of Bulembia division Kasoke Pascal expressed fears that the district may be hit by famine since the heavy rains have destroyed many gardens.

Kasoke advised people who live on hilly areas to relocate to the low lands.

The Regional Police Commander SP Asimwe Samuel explained that according to the weather forecast by Uganda National Metrological Authority issued on 4th September 2019, western Uganda would experience heavy rains until late December.

Asimwe appealed to the residents to adopt to the system of terracing and to plant more trees on the hills.

Kasese has previously suffered extreme weather conditions ranging from floods, landslides to strong winds. T
