Exams will commence as earlier scheduled despite strikes- MAK VC
Makerere University Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe has said that students will not be given more time to prepare for upcoming exams despite wasting a whole two weeks striking over the 15 percent tuition increment.
Nawangwe says that the semester program remains as earlier scheduled irrespective of the strike.

“Management wishes to thank students and lecturers who continued with normal activities despite isolated disruptions. Management calls upon all students to resume classes immediately,” a statement from Nawangwe reads in part.
“Security for those carrying on with their duties will be provided. Examinations will commence as planned on 18th November 2019 and there will be no extension to the semester,” the statement continues.
Nawangwe claims that the situation at Makerere is ‘gradually normalising’. He says that an emergency meeting held by the University Council halted increment on functional fees but stayed the 15 percent increment on tuition.
The Vice-Chancellor also blames the strike on the ‘impatience’ by students who started demonstrations before the council meeting on their demands.
“These demonstrations started after a meeting between the University management and the Guild Representative Council. At the meeting, management had conceded practically to all students’ demands, including suspension of surcharges for late payment of fees and late registration,” Nawangwe claims.
“Management, however, had however requested the students to await a meeting of the council, which would discuss the petition submitted to the chairperson of Makerere University council regarding the fees structure. As it were, the students were not patient enough to await the meeting of the council and decided to start demonstrations which culminated into riots.”
