Graduate doctors give Makerere University one week to produce their degree certificates

Makerere University Medical School alumni have given the institution an ultimatum of 7 days to give them their graduation certificates with immediate effect and failure to comply they intend to sue the institution.

While addressing the media on Tuesday in Kampala, the leader of the group Dr. Enos Kigozi said failure to acquire their certificate in time has denied over 135 doctors and 16 dental surgeons opportunity to get employment since they must have their academic documents to practise their profession.

“Many of us as well missed out on many employment opportunities because a licence is part of a requirement before you apply for the job and once you don’t have it, you are definitely disqualified,”he said.

The medics claimed to have finalised their studies in June last year and graduated early this year with the expectation of having their degree certificates ready but since then, nothing has been done.

Dr Kigozi said they have so far waited for 8 months despite numerous letters written to the university officials.

Dr. Bill Wamboka one of the alumnus said that they have written to the concerned offices several times but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

“We have approached the administration, notified them and asked for their help. Just like any alumni of Makerere do and we have not got any response. If they don’t produce our university degree certificates we are going to the court,"he said.

The university spokesperson, Dr Muhammad Kiggundu, confirmed the doctors allegations and justified the delay.

“We have our suppliers that we have been dealing with and there was a challenge in terms of concluding the contract..but finally it was concluded," he said.
