Uwocaso And Uganda Golf Club Are Back With The Fight Against Breast Cancer
The Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organization (UWOCASO) in partnership with the Uganda Golf Club Women wing - have today launched the 7th Breast Cancer Fundraising Golf Tournament at the Uganda Golf Club.
UWOCASO is a group of female cancer survivors whose initiative is to contribute towards supporting patients and empowering communities with Cancer information and treatment as a means of reducing the impact of disease in Uganda.
According to the WHO 2018 fact sheet, it is evident that cancer is the leading cause of death globally with about 1 in 6 deaths being reported. The Globacan 2018 highlights Uganda as one of the countries with the highest numbers of young women being affected by breast cancer, recording 2,318 new cases and 1,076 deaths in the year 2018.
Breast cancer mostly affects young women with a mean age of 42 years at the peak of their lives when it’s time for career development, starting families and or when maximally contributing to national development.
Most of the recorded cases led to Mastectomy (removal of breasts) the major treatment option among others to minimize the spread of the disease.
In a bid to fight the impact of cancer in Uganda, UWOCASO in partnership with the Uganda Golf Club is hosting the 7th breast cancer fundraising Golf tournament dubbed the ‘Pink October’ at the Uganda Golf club on 4th October 2019 with a target of raising 100 million shillings.
The funds are meant to acquire special bras and prosthesis (artificial breasts) for women who have lost their breasts to cancer and subsidize treatment for 50 patients (radiotherapy and chemotherapy)
The Campaign is spearheaded by the Ambassador in the fight against breast cancer Hon. Evelyne Asiimwe, the UPDF representative in the Parliament of Uganda, supported by the Lady Captain Anne Abeja.
While launching the tournament, Asiimwe highlighted the need to sensitize the public about breast cancer and the called for support from the general public.
“For a woman to lose her breast is worse than the cancer itself, it is a tragedy we cannot overlook. Women will delay treatment for fear of loss of the breasts and the nightmare to live without them.” She Said.
Registration towards supporting the cause is open and well-wishers can register a team or sponsor a team at five hundred thousand (500,000) shillings while individuals can register at fifty thousand (50,000) shillings.
