World Championships: Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi claims gold in 800m

Nakaayi

Uganda’s Halimah Nakaayi plundered gold in the 800m at the World Athletics Championships on Monday.

She clocked 1:58:04.

Nakaayi’s victory also earned her a cash prize of $60,000 (Shs 221 million).

Her colleague Winnie Nanyondo came 4th in 1:59.18 and earned $15,000 (Shs 54 million).

It is the second World Championship athletics medal by a Ugandan woman, the first having been Dorcus Inzikuru’s gold in the 3000m steeplechase 14 years ago in Helsinki.

Winnie Nanyondo the other Ugandan in the final finished fourth earning $15,000 (sh54.7m)

In an earlier women’s steeplechase final Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai finished fifth.

Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech opened up long gap right from the gun to the finish to take gold.

Nanyondo and Nakaayi came to Doha enjoying the best form of their careers.

This form was very evident as the championship got underway last week. While Nakaayi won her semi-final Nanyondo was second.
