Ugandans in Sweden join in gay pride parade
On September 21, a number of Ugandans living in Sweden participated in celebrations of the LGBTQ community in Uppsala.
Some of them openly showed their support to the LGBTQ community, which back in Uganda could have attracted condemnation and perhaps some time in jail.
In September 2016, Sections of LGBTQ community in Uganda attempted to hold a similar parade in Entebbe, 40KM from Kampala.
But the parade was violently broken up by security agencies who arrested more than 30 activists. Being gay in Uganda remains a crime and could lead to social exclusion.
Many LGBTQ Ugandans live in fear while others have fled the country.
The Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2014 was passed by Parliament on 20 December 2013 with life in prison substituted for the death penalty.
Whereas it was signed into law by President Museveni on 24 February 2014, the Constitutional Court on 1 August 2014 annulled the law saying it was passed without the required quorum in the House.
