DP bloc wants Uganda expelled from Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

The DP bloc has demanded for the expulsion of Uganda from Commonwealth Parliamentary Association(CPA) due to the alleged gross human rights violations and incompetence when it comes to democracy.

While addressing journalists at the party headquarters yesterday in Kampala, Mike Mabikke a member of DP bloc, noted that following the gross human rights abuses and increase rate of crime, Uganda is not suitable to host such a diplomatic conference.

He said the meeting is being held at the time when Uganda is in a bad situation and experiencing high increase of human rights abuses calling upon CPA to raise these issues and at the end of the meeting Uganda is expected to be expelled from CPA.

“We expect members of Parliament and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to raise these issues of human rights abuses. We expect the commonwealth to bite and we think that Commonwealth Parliamentary Association chose a wrong class to conduct this meeting,” he said.

He called upon development partners to impose economic sanctions against Uganda’s political leadership and security heads for gross violation of human rights and freedom.

“What type of club is this that can not condemn such transgression of human rights? Such transgression of fundamental freedom? Such transgression of separation of powers between different arms of government?" he wondered.

Mabikke said it is time for the leaders who issued orders and security operatives and those who executes such orders to be sanctioned not only by the US but also other development partners such as UK and European Union.

He also appealed to the commonwealth countries to cease lending to Uganda because the country already has an overwhelming debts burden and perhaps ,the president misuses the fund given to him.

Samuel Walter Mukaaku also a DP bloc member, cited the example of the former president of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe whose country was deprived the chance of hosting the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference due to human right abuses.

“This conference should have been cancelled as it was in the case of Mugabe, see the political rights the dehumanisation our people. The crimes against Humanity that have just taken place all around this country starting from Kasese and elsewhere,” he said.

He called upon the Commonwealth to sanction Uganda and president Museveni so that he can leave power for a competent government.
