Anti-corruption court maintains charges against MP Munyagwa

Pamella Lamunu of the Anti-Corruption Court yesterday dismissed an application by Mubarak Munyagwa, the Kawempe South MP, seeking to block his trial in the court.

He is now expected to other plead innocent or guilty on November 4, 2019.

Munyagwa, the chairperson of COSASE had sought to have charges dropped on grounds that the complainant in the case had lost interest.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had no right to institute such offences against him when the complainant, Francis Kakumba, lost interest.

But Lamunu said the criminal offences were committed against the state and not an individual.

According to the charge sheet, Munyagwa  faces three counts of corruption.

Prosecution states that in the month of December 2014 at Haks Investment Limited, being a Mayor Kawempe Division, Munyagwa solicited for a gratification of Shs100m from Kakumba in exchange for him to exert improper influence over Kawempe Division Urban Council to nominate Muyanja Isaac for appointment as a member of Kampala City Land Board representing Kawempe Division.

In count two which is also corruption, Munyagwa is accused of receiving a gratification of $ 20000 an evaluate of about Shs 73million from Kakumba in exchange for him to exert improper influence over Kawempe Division Urban Council to nominate Isaac Muyanja.
