South Korea commits to 'durable' partnership with Uganda in transforming lives, economy and Uganda Airlines

The government of South Korea has said they will achieve all costs to maintain a working and durable relationship with Uganda across all aspects that affect the ordinary lives of the latter’s citizens.

The assurance was made by H.E. Ha Byung-Kyoo , the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Uganda, during an event to mark the Korean National Day, at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I say all this to underscore the fact that the Republic of Korea is firmly committed to stronger ties with Uganda across the board, especially in those areas which we both agree are most pertinent to ordinary Ugandans’ lives, and that we shall spare no expense in making this partnership a durable one. To that end, allow me to extend my sincere gratitude to all our friends in the various ministries and agencies of the Government of Uganda for your guidance and teamwork in fulfilling our shared tasks. We truly value your positive engagement with us,” Byung-Kyoo said.

The ambassador congratulated Uganda upon reviving the national carrier and pledged their contribution through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to ensure the success of the airline.

“…. allow me to belatedly congratulate Uganda on the restarting of its national air carrier. Uganda Airlines is indeed a story of Ugandan pride, strong spirit, and foresight. I hope that KOICA’s ongoing project to modernize and automate the Entebbe International Airport will also make a contribution to the success of Uganda Airlines.”

Uganda’s minister for veteran affairs, Bright Rwamirama who was the delegated chief guest thanked the Korean republic for its support towards Uganda’s 2040 vision through their various projects.

He highlighted that the Korean republic has been instrumental in supporting Uganda deal with the refugee influx.

“The Korean republic was instrumental in the setting up f the Soroti Fruit Processing factory which was commissioned by HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in April. The factory will provide massive employment and increase household income for Ugandans in and around the region”

“Korea has been actively supporting Uganda’s refugee policy. In July, the Korean government through the WFP made the second donation of 5000 tonnes of rice for refugees in Uganda. More to this, the Korean republic is currently collaborating with UNDP in implementing an economic empowerment program for women in the refugee-hosting districts, as well as working in partnership with UNHCR to improve access to quality education for refugee children. I’m happy to say that Korea’s contribution so far already exceeds its commitment made at the 2017 Solidarity Summit on Refugees.”

Among other programs, the Korean republic is currently strengthening the health care system in greater Masaka. In June, they donated ambulances and other medical emergency equipment to Masaka referral hospital.

Korea National Day

The event was to celebrate the 4352nd anniversary of the founding of the Korean nation. Korea traces its foundation far back to 2333 BC. However, a modern republic was established in1948.
