It will be a renewal of rivalry on Friday evening as Express FC hosts record champions Sports Club Villa in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League at Wankulukuku.
In the past, the games involving the two teams used to be the talk of the town as the entire Kampala was painted red and blue but this has only remained a story of the past.
Never the less, fans should expect some mouthwatering action at Wankulukuku considering the events prior to the game.
Coming into the game, Express tactician, George Simwogerere got a lifeline when his team won their first game of the season by beating resilient Mbarara City away in Luzira and this was a big boost to the team.
For SC Villa, they come into the game with every reason to smile after the FUFA Competitions Panel gave them three points that saw them move to the top of the league for the first time in many months after a dismal start that saw them lose to newcomers Kyetume FC.
The game will see another rivalry renewed among the teams with arguably the most irate fans in Ugandan football and the game will be a big test for the referees to handle the game.
Past meetings
In the previous 12 meetings between the two members of the famous VEK, SC Villa has had an upper hand, having won six times whereas the home side has won only three times.
The last 10 league meetings between the two fading giants have produced 22 goals with SC Villa having an upper hand in the goals scored.
If records are to go by, Express have an upper hand in the Friday game because in the last six league outings at Wankulukuku, SC Villa has only beaten them once.
The coaches’ say
The Friday game will be another big test for Express coach George Simwogere who the fans were baying for his head courtesy of the dismal start by the team this season.
He was only saved by the emphatic win against Mbarara City.
“We have played with them (SC Villa) for many years and my players are ready for them. I am expecting a very good game and a win to that,”Simwogerere says ahead of the Kampala derby.
For SC Villa’s new coach, Fred Kaziba, the sentiments are the same as he promises to dismantle the enemy who tries to stand in his way to glory.
He says his subjects are well prepared for the task ahead.
