Ministry of Health gets Shs 1.3 bn from MTN for health facilities

The ministry of Health has received financial support from the proceeds of the last year’s annual marathon that saw telecom operator MTN collect Shs 600 million.

The resources, topped up by MTN foundation arm to  Shs 1.3 billion will be channeled towards refurbishing and equipping health centre in four districts.

Speaking to the media on Thursday the minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, confirmed that Kawempe referral hospital maternal and neonatal wing is one of the beneficiaries.

This followed the news that circulated on social media indicating that Kawempe hospital had no space for delivery.

"Many of you saw on social media the situation in Kawempe where babies were crowded together and the numbers of deliveries are excessively high ranging between 80 to 120 babies born in a day,” she said.

She added: "Through this collaboration, we shall see MTN foundation refurbish and also procure some equipment for the unit so that the mothers can comfortably deliver and the babies are also treated well before they are discharged."

The general manager MTN corporate affairs Enid Edroma gave an assurance that further financial assistance will be made to fix the structural issues at the hospital.

“Depending on what is available or what is necessary, we will then make further allocations to equipment,” she said.
