SC Villa 3-1 Mbarara City FC

Mandela National Stadium, Namboole

Record champions SC Villa rediscovered their touch to beat Mbarara City in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on Wednesday night.

The 16-time champions had lost their opening game to newcomers Kyetume FC but they put that aside to produce beautiful display in a game played on floodlights on Wednesday evening.

The Jogoos showed early intent only for their chances to go begging.

The key moment came in the 36th minute when defender Ronald Otti made a defensive mistake that was capitalised on by David Owori to put the ball past the Mbarara goalkeeper Tom Ikara for SC Villa’s first goal.

The record champions took the game beyond reach only six minutes later through Emma Kalyowa for the game to go into recess with the hosts in the driving seat.

After recess, Brian Aheebwa halved the deficit for the Ankole Lions with a powerful shot in the 73rd minute but their joy never lasted when two minutes later, a beautiful combination of Gavin Kizito, Bashir Mutanda and Ambrose Kirya saw a multitude of passes exchanged between the trio.

Kirya finished off the job with a shot that beat Ikara to send SC Villa fans into frenzy with the third goal of the day.

It was not long when the centre referee blew the final whistle and this ensured SC Villa had beaten Mbarara City 3-1 in their second game of the season.

SC Villa coach, Edward Kaziba was full of praise for his boys who he said responded well to the team’s defeat against Kyetume in their opening game.

“The boys are slowly but surely returning to their form. The win is quite important as it gives us hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel,”Kaziba said after the game.
