Police arrest suspect in the kidnap, murder of NGO staff whose body was found in Mukono

Police have arrested a man suspected to have been part of the group that kidnapped and later killed Maria Nagirinya, an NGO staff who went missing on Wednesday but his body was recovered on Friday in Mukono.

The body of Nagirinya, a staff at Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI) a Non-Government Organisation that works in the Water and Sanitation sub-sector who kidnapped from Busega in Kampala was found dumped in a trench in Mukono together with that of her driver, Ronald Kitayimbwa with whom she was kidnapped.

According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, one suspect has been arrested to help police in investigations into the matter.

“We have arrested one suspect who is in custody to help us with investigations,”Onyango said in a statement.

The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, however, declined to divulge information regarding the identity of the suspect in their custody, saying it would jeopardise their investigations.

Nagirinya was abducted by unknown people at around 11 pm on Wednesday as she waited at the gate for her sister at her rented residence in Busega, Kampala district.

The bodies of Nagirinya and Kitayimbwa were found on Friday at Nakituruli, Nakitutuli village, Nama sub-county in Mukono district along the Mukono –Kayunga road covered with dry grass in a water channel.

Earlier, police had recovered her vehicle, a Toyota Spacio, registration number UBA570V in Nateete where it had been abandoned and on close examination, the occupants’ identity documents were recovered.

Detectives also found out that there was a scuffle in the vehicle.

This is the second incident of Kidnap in Lungujja- Busega areas.

In 2017, Suzan Magara, a 28-year-old cashier with Bwendero Dairy Farm (BDF) along Kabaka Anjagala road in Rubaga was reportedly kidnapped while driving to her home in Lungujja, Lubaga Division.

Her motor vehicle was found abandoned on the roadside after the kidnap.

Magara’s body was later found dumped in Kigo, along the Entebbe expressway.
