Church of Uganda announces Archbishop Ntagali’s successor today

The Province of the Church of Uganda will today, Wednesday announce the 9th Archbishop to succeed Stanley Ntagali whose tenure will end next year.

According to the Church of Uganda constitution, the Archbishop can serve for only 10 years or leaves upon clocking 65 years.

Ntagali has served for only seven and a half years because he was elected and enthroned as Archbishop on  December 16, 2012 at the age of 57 and will be turning 65, the mandatory retirement age on March 1, 2020 .

Who elects?

The House of Bishops is the body that elects the Archbishop and is comprised of all active Diocesan and Assistant Bishops who are currently 37 in number.

The current 37 Bishops are, Sheldon Fredrick Mwesigwa(Ankole diocese), Alfred Acur Okodi(West Lango), Paul Masaba(Sebei), Stephen Kaziimba(Mityana), James Nasak(North Karamoja), George Turyasingura(East Rwenzori), Edison Irigei(Kumi), Stanley Ntagali(Kampala), Alfred Olwa(Lango), Cranmer Mugisha(Muhabura), Benon Magezi(North Kigezi), Kosea Odongo(Soroti), Samuel Egesa(Bukedi), Sam Kahuma(Bunyoro-Kitara), Joseph Abura(Karamoja and Elidad Nsubuga(Luweero)

Others are James William Ssebaggala(Mukono), Samuel Gidudu(North Mbale), Nathan Ahimbisibwe(South Ankole), Paul Naimanhye(Busoga), George Bagamuhunda(Kigezi), Collins Andaku(Madi-West Nile), Johnson Gakumba(Northern Uganda), Jackson Nzerebende(South Rwenzori),Michael Lubowa(Central Buganda), George Kasangaki(Masindi- Kitara), Alphonse Watho-kudi( Nebbi), Reuben Kisembo(Rwenzori) Johnson Twinomujuni(West Ankole), Patrick Wakula(Central Busoga), Wilson Kitara(Kitgum), Patrick Gidudu(Mbale), Stephen Namanya(North Ankole), Amos Magezi(Northwest Ankole) and Henry Katumba Tamale(West Buganda)

Of the 37 Bishops, only 33 are eligible to become Archbishop.

Election

The bishops on Tuesday went into a retreat in Lweza, along Entebbe road and they are expected to conduct elections that will begin with nomination of eligible candidates.

After nominations, the bishops will through a secret ballot vote for the Archbishop from those nominated and the winner will be decided by two-thirds majority of the voters.

The Provincial Chancellor presides over the election.

After the election, the Bishop elected is referred to as the “Archbishop-elect.”

He will not officially become the Archbishop until he is enthroned (installed) as the Archbishop, which will take place on Sunday, 1st March 2020 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe.

Past Archbishops

1. Leslie Brown, a British missionary and was the first Archbishop of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire (1961-1966)

2. Erica Sabiti (1966 – 1974)

3. Janani Luwum (1974 – 1977)

4. Silvanus Wani (1977 – 1983). In 1980, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire became a separate, Francophone Province, and Uganda became its own Province.

5. Yona Okoth (1983 – 1995)

6. Livingstone Mpalanyi-Nkoyoyo (1995 – 2004)

7. Henry Luke Orombi (2004 – 2012)

8. Stanley Ntagali (2012-2020)
