Let us bridge the generation gap

MARSELLA ARISO

It’s a challenge unfortunately neglected by society yet it’s an epidemic that will eventually catch up with the growing generation.

Generation gap is a difference of attitudes between people of different generations regarding beliefs, politics or values leading to lack of understanding.

Many a time, this generation gap has caused conflict between many young people and their elders; mainly because they tend to misunderstand and conflict in opinions.

These gaps are often widened by technological advances.

Previously, our parents were exactly an epitome of perfect relationships.

Until now, it’s unbelievable or unimaginable that we may even exactly reach their standards. Most of this could mainly be because of the structures in the hierarchy, culture and commitment they had.

Economic pressures on the young have exacerbated by recent wage stagnation and rising under-employment.

Older households are better cushioned from low wage growth because they are more likely to have other sources of income. Young Ugandans will also then bear the brunt of growing pressures on government budgets.

Similarly, today it’s difficult to find mutual relationships with relatives, married couples or fellow colleagues at different settings because of ideological differences.

This has created room for disrespect and varying disregard among people which fails social living and mutual understanding.

Evident is the number of marriages that last to even see up to their third anniversary due to various reasons which include materialism, egoism, and lack of compromise among other factors.

This is alarming because a family is supposed to be a breeding hub for moral upbringing, safety and breed a sense of belonging to an individual.

1990’s children I believe saw the best in relationships especially in the area of marriage through the double effort by parents and all stake holders holding the responsibility of joined upbringing.

As responsible citizens, it’s our duty to stand up, rise and support each other to bridge the gap between generations to ensure respect, mutual understanding and better economic standards for a better Uganda.
