Police to increase protection for elderly as attacks on them increase

The Uganda Police through the Directorate of Political Commiserate has directed Regional Police commandants to take extra care of the elderly. 

This comes as a result of increasing cases of murder of the elderly. The police has recorded seven murder cases in different parts of the country.

Between July 14th and August 2019, 10 cases have been reported in which seven of those cases the victims have been hacked to death in different parts of the country. The most recent happened in Ntungamo last week where a one Kabaterere Fridah was killed by a shamba boy in her own home.

Police is holding three suspects. They include a one Kato Wilfred who has been working in Kabaterere’s home and was arrested in Rukungiri, Natukunda Judith a former house maid in the same home and Kaitesi Sharon who is Kabaterere’s daughter in law and with whom they have been having misunderstandings over family property.

It is said that the prime suspect in this case Kato Wilfred hacked the old woman with a panga when her grandson was away, dragged her body to the bathroom and left water running before fleeing the scene. He took refuge in Rukungiri where he was arrested. 

Kato Wilfred recorded an extra judicial statement where he admitted to have committed the offense.

The police say in the recent past there increasing cases of murdering the elderly, stealing land from them among others taking the advantage of their vulnerability.
