Police resurrect Habari magazine to help improve deteriorating image

The Uganda Police Force has resurrected their Habari Magazine as one of the ways to improve their deteriorating image among the public.

The function to re-launch the magazine was officiated by AIGP Asan Kasingye, the Chief Political Commissar for Police, the Police Commissioner in charge of Information and Publications, Emilian Kayima and Police spokesperson Fred Enanga at Naguru.

“The magazine will promote inter police communication as police officers will also get a chance to express themselves to the public other than using social media to express their grievances,” Kasingye said.

“The magazine will help bridge the gap between the police and the public.”

The police Habari Magazine was started by the colonial administration in the 1930s before the name was changed to Mwangaza but never saw the light of the day.

The police have in the past suffered a deteriorating image among the public over a number of issues related to human rights violations and failure to fight crime.

Since his appointment as the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola has made a number of changes in a bid to improve the police image.

However, according to AIGP Kasingye, the magazine will help police do accountability to the public, noting that this way, their image will be improved.

“All the police directorates will publish their annual strategic plans and their achievements for the public to see. On the other hand, the public will also be allowed to make a contribution through airing out their views on matters concerning crime and the police force at large,” Kasingye said.

The magazine will also give chance to experts in various fields to analyse key issues of concern in a bid to demystify various myths that the public has.

“The police image is not being improved much by what we tell them through the media but through the magazine, our officers will themselves write and tell the public what they are doing.”

The first edition of the quarterly magazine according to Kasingye will focus on issues concerning children.

The Habari police magazine will cost shs5000.
