The National Council for Higher Education has tasked Universities that have been offering Higher Education Certificates to acquire certifications for the program since the Council has set minimum standards for the program.

Gulu, Busitema and Mbarara University of Science and Technology embraced the program first and have been offering certificates to students who fail to get the minimum requirements to join universities for degree and diploma certificates.

The National Council for Higher Education has set minimum standards for the higher education and universities are expected to review their programs taking into account the standards that have been set and submit to the commission for accreditation.

The program that runs for one year puts emphasis on science and technology and students who fail to meet the requirements are given chance to enroll for this bridging program and later join universities for the degree or diploma.

This was during a dissemination seminar today at National Council For Higher Education headquarters in Kampala, where the council’s Executive Director Professor Mary Okwakol asked universities to make it easier for students to join universities.

She also appreciated institutions that have been running this bridging program.

The higher education certificate is supported by FAWE in the universities where it has been, organization that targets mostly girls enrolling for science programs also extended to helping boys since girls who go for science course were very few.

The rural disadvantaged districts were given priority and a number of students from upcountry districts have benefited.

The current admission requirements for any student to join university for a degree program are at least two principal passes and one principal pass and two subsidiaries for a diploma program.

There is no remedial program for candidates who qualify for UACE but have not scored sufficiently good grades to enroll for degree or diploma program.
