The vice president of Uganda, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has challenged the health sector to share experiences on governance for health in Africa to form basis for further review of strategies that facilitate monitoring and evaluation of social and development goals.

He made the remarks while closing the special consultations on governance for health in Africa conference held at Munyonyo.

He noted that although Africa has registered success in fighting sexually transmitted diseases, the occasional outbreak of Ebola undermines consolidation of such achievements.

The three day special consultations on governance for health conference has set an agenda for African countries to implement the resolutions which include; strengthening strategic communication on health sector across Africa for the full realisation that health is an investment and not an issue for traditional health sector.

Ssekandi noted that such health conference present a platform for the experts in the health sector to share experiences that can help to form the basis for the review of strategies that improve monitoring and implementation of social development goals.

"Africa has made good improvement in combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS however, the threat for the outbreak of infectious diseases such as Ebola in neighbouring DRC is a matter of concern," he said.

He noted that non communicable diseases are also on the rise.

“It’s my hope that the proposal that have emerged from the conference will be widely shared to influence timely and suitable policy," he noted.

Uganda has embraced universal health coverage and it’s the duty and a right of every citizen to participate in caring of their health.
