VIDEO: MPs demand report on Nebanda's death

The Leader of government business in parliament and Prime Minister of Uganda Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has directed government Attorney General William Byaruhanga to produce a report on the sudden 2012 death former Butaleja woman representative Cerinah Nebanda.

The vocal young legislator's untimely death on December 12 left many wondering about the cause of her death.

Before her sudden death, Nebanda had made a name for herself as a vocal critic of her party the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and was labelled a "rebel MP." Nebanda and several other young NRM MPs were pushing for what they described as more openness and democratic practice in the party led by President Yoweri Museveni.

Adam Kalungi, the said boyfriend of the late Butaleja woman MP, Cerinah Nebanda, was convicted of manslaughter on grounds that he was negligent and never took Nebanda to hospital in time.

His co-accused Ali Omar was acquitted of during the ruling at the Makindye Chief Magistrate's court in January, 2014.

However, on Thursday, Jinja East legislator Paul Mwiru tasked government to explain why a report on the death of the bubbly legislator has never been tabled to the House.

In 2013, former Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki appointed Justice Paul Mugamba to conduct an Inquest into the circumstances that led to her death and a report was to be presented to government and nothing has been tabled.

This prompted Dr Rugunda to direct that AG Byaruhanga ensure government presents a report on Nebanda's death to the house.

Despite the prime minister's directive, several MPs expressed doubt that the Nebanda death report will ever be tabled in the house because of what they claim is the government's interest in the matter.

At the time of her death, fellow "NRM rebel MPs" like Dr Chris Baryomunsi, Medard Bitekyerezo and Muhammad Nsereko briefly ended up behind bars after they vowed to reveal to the public "the real cause" of the MP's death. They were accused by the then General Kale Kayihura led police of interfering with investigations.
