Sudan military leaders meet Museveni in Mbale

President Museveni on Thursday met with the leaders of the Sudan Transitional Military Council led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan at the Mbale state lodge.

Following the overthrow of President Omar al- Bashir early this year, a Transitional Military Council comprising seven members was put in place to steer the country.

On Thursday, the team met with the Ugandan President and held talks.

“At the Mbale State Lodge today, I met with members of the Sudan Transitional Military Council led by His Excellency, Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan,”Museveni said in a statement.

“They gave me a very good briefing on the situation in Sudan and we discussed our possible collaboration towards restoration of peace and prosperity in the country. It is a cause we shall support.”

According to Museveni he told his visitors of the dangerous situation that Sudan is currently involved in, adding that it scares away business as well as affecting the livelihood of the people.

“In Uganda, we experienced this and we lost a lot of development time. The best way, therefore, is to agree and move in a democratic way. I am happy to hear that Sudan is moving in this direction and we wish the very best to this government in charge of the transition.”

The Sudanese military and the country’s civilian opposition on Friday reached a preliminary power sharing deal as the first step towards stabilization of the country after the ousting of Omar al- Bashir.

The preliminary deal, which was reached Friday, would put Sudan under the control of a joint sovereign council with power shifting between military and civilian leadership over about three years.

The authority will be led by a military leader for the first 21 months, and then a civilian leader would take over for 18 months.

After the end of that period, the country would hold democratic elections.

The sovereign council will consist of five military officials and five civilian leaders, along with one additional civilian, selected and agreed to by both groups.
